Salwa’s Special Peas Recipe

sham ibrahim cookingThis special recipe has been a favorite in my family for three generations, yet it never had a name until we needed one for the show.  We are calling it Salwa’s Special Peas, after my mother.  It’s nutritious and easy to cook.  See the episode here.

What you need:

recipe1 lb lean ground beef (we cook a vegetarian version on the show and use a Vegan Burger Mix  We recommend that you select one that is not soy based since most soy crops have been genetically modified and over sprayed with pesticides.)
1 10 oz bag organic green peas
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 large can organic tomato sauce
1 garlic clove, minced (optional)
1 cup brown rice
2 cups water
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon parsley flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil

Directions:

  • Add the rice and water to a saucepan and cook until done, about 20 minutes
  • Add the olive oil to a cast iron dutch oven or large cast iron skillet along with the onions, garlic and ground beef.
  • When well browned, pour off any excess grease.  Add tomato sauce and spices and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and add the frozen peas.
  • Cook a few more minutes and serve over a bed of the brown rice.
